Heat is one of the few things every human experiences. We live under different skies, in different time zones, through different versions of reality. But we all feel heat.
And in my view, it’s the defining trend of our lifetimes. It decides how we live. How we move. How we survive. It drives pleasure, pressure and nostalgia. And in more ways than we realise, it’s embedded in culture and collective memory.
When the temperatures rise, it feels natural to think less in systems and more in sensations. So I wanted to curate something that reflects this seasonal drift. Something rooted in summertime atmosphere.
Surfacing transcultural signals this summer
To fully explain the why of this project, a bit about me: I’m half Greek, half English and went to an international school in Germany. I’m what you call a ‘cross-cultural kid’. I grew up in Munich, which is also known as ‘the most northern city in Italy’. A place where many diasporic communities thrive, including Greeks, Turks, Croats and Italians. So the Mediterranean region is near and dear to me, through family, language and lived experience.
But this project isn’t about me, or about dwelling in nostalgia. It’s about tuning into the shared currents of a region that’s both multifaceted and interconnected. Having lived in London for over a decade, I’ve come to appreciate the dynamics of cultural overlap in a cosmopolitan environment. It’s taught me that sharing space in this way means meeting otherness with curiosity. So the purpose of this series is to create a kind of transcultural archive, dedicated to the Mediterranean region as a whole. One that celebrates the solidarities that reveal themselves when we trace the threads that connect us.
Curating a panoramic line-up of cultural intelligence
Rather than centring my own perspective, I’ll be taking a curatorial role in this series, bringing together a diverse mix of young Mediterranean voices, both local and diasporic. Each contributor will follow a simple but intentional format: a short set of creative prompts that invites them to share anecdotal fragments, seasonal rituals, untranslatable expressions and more. The aim is to trace the moods that rise to the surface in each person. Like a thermal scanner, picking up colourful imprints where the energy is highest.
Everyone involved works in the creative industries. Together, this group will bring a layered mix of insights, offering authentic takes on a region often framed reductively by mainstream and social media, especially through the Anglosphere.
